Where to get an abortion

Where you go to have an abortion will depend on the type of abortion you are going to have, and your situation.

Medication abortion

Medication abortion can be provided by GPs and specialists.

Medication abortion is available from some community health centres, GP clinics, public hospitals and private abortion care clinics.

Not all GPs in Victoria provide medication abortion so always check with a service before making an appointment.

Surgical abortion

Surgical abortion is available at private abortion care clinics and some public hospitals.

It can also depend on where you live...

If you live in or near Melbourne, you will generally have more choice in the number of abortion services that are available to you.

If you live in rural or regional Victoria, while you may be able to access a local service, you might have to travel to Melbourne if you live in an area that has no nearby services.

and how many weeks pregnant you are.

Medication abortions are only prescribed until 9 weeks of pregnancy.

In Victoria, there are only a small number of services that provide abortions after 12 weeks of pregnancy and these are generally located in Melbourne.

The longer a pregnancy progresses, the more difficult and expensive it can be to access abortion services.
